We had the distinct pleasure of hosting the incomparable Bike Snob to our store this week as he tours the West Coast in support of his recently released new book. The Ultimate Bicycle Owner’s Manual is, well, the ultimate owner’s manual for a bicycle. We took to our own bicycles during the day to show The Snob our fair city’s two new bridges in all their great-for-bicyclists glory.
We rode from the main store, past the River City Bicycles Outlet on Belmont, and over to SE 7th. We took the SE Tilikum Way path to the Tilikum Crossing where, just as we rolled into sight, The Snob gasped in delight at this new civic marvel.
Snob and River City Bicycles founder, Dave Guettler, rode side by side over the bridge while discussing the merits of their travel bikes. Dave has a titanium Ritchey BreakAway and Snob rides a Surly Travelers Check. A lot of miles and stories in each of those two bicycles.
We stopped off at Lovejoy Bakers on SW Moody for a quick coffee and to meet Michael from Bike Portland before heading south to the new Sellwood Bridge. While waiting in line one very limited edition Willamette Week was created. Imagine the surprise and delight for the lucky reader who grabbed this priceless issue. “This guy stinks.”
The in-store appearance started promptly for the standing-room-only crowd and it was hilarious right from the very start. The Snob is as funny in person as is online and perhaps even funnier. Could’ve been the Olympia Beer, though.
Autograph seekers bought new books and brought previous titles for The Snob to sign. They did not leave disappointed.
Most important, Portland did not disappoint The Snob. Well done, Portland!
We received a note from Snob this morning, “Thanks again for everything, that was great. Hope it’s not too long before I’m back out here.”
Yeah, we hope the same thing, too.
